Forming a prominent feature within the Hillbrow Grassland site, Ickeford Tumulus is a raised burial mound dating from the Bronze Age (approximately 2000 to 1400 BC). There is a second burial site to the east, but agricultural activities mean it is no longer visible. Both sites are designated by Historic England as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and form part of a wider ceremonial landscape. Further details can be found here.
Excavation of the site in 1816 uncovered:
- Part of a pottery urn
- Two bronze spearheads
- A copper blade
- A cremation in a wooden casket
- A human skeleton
Tree works autumn 2026
Over time, trees and woody vegetation have become established on the burial mound. Their roots are damaging the archaeological remains and affecting the long-term preservation of this nationally important site.
As is often the case, finding a solution required us to consider both ecological and archaeological interests. We were delighted that by working with Natural England and Historic England, we found what we believe to be a good solution which has been fully funded by Natural England.

What works will take place and when?
The woody vegetation growing on the burial mound will be removed, leaving just the mature beech trees to help preserve the site's character.
Depending on the weather conditions, the work will take place during late summer or early autumn and will take approximately one week. The timing has been carefully planned to be outside the bird breeding season, while allowing time for nature to settle and establish itself before winter.
What are the benefits for nature?
Although the works are primarily for the archaeological benefit of the site, they will support a wider plan to maintain and enhance the chalk grassland habitat. Chalk grassland supports a range of specialist plants and other wildlife that thrive in open, sunny conditions.
Will heavy machinery damage the archaeology?
Site operatives are well briefed on the importance of the site, there are exclusion zones in place to ensure that heavy machinery does not cause damage.
Location and access
