Greenway Points of Interest
Look out for these points of interest along the Garden City Greenway!
Croft Lane Orchard
This extensive orchard of over 400 trees mainly produces apples for local cider production. The north east section also contains a community orchard with apples and other fruits that can be enjoyed during autumn.
Hillbrow Grassland
This chalk grassland is home to a rich tapestry of wildflowers, starting with cowslips in spring, followed by majestic pyramid orchids and carpets of kidney vetch, ox-eye daisy and knapweed. This floral diversity makes it an important area for butterflies and moths.
Hillfort on Wilbury Hill
Under the top part of this slope lies the site of a Bronze Age hillfort. This would have been some form of settlement surrounded by earthworks. Find out more.
Ickleford Tumulus
Under a prominent stand of trees lie two Bronze Age burial mounds, which are designated as a scheduled ancient monument. Please help protect this monument by leaving the ground undisturbed. Find out more.
Manor Wood & Willian Arboretum
These two neighbouring areas of woodland offer a range of spaces to explore, play in and have a picnic. There is also a small community orchard, help yourself to an apple in the autumn!
New site for Arbor Day Planting
Re-imagining a Letchworth ceremony which began in 1908, this site has been chosen as the dedicated area for Arbor Day tree planting and celebration. Find out more.
Norton Pond
This is a seasonal (ephemeral) pond, which means that it fills up during winter and spring and tends to dry out during summer. This provides important habitat for breeding amphibians such as newts, which risk being eaten by fish in more permanent ponds.
Pix Brook
The Pix Brook chalk stream is never far from the northwestern section of the Greenway. With clear water fed by underground aquifers, chalk steams are very special nature-rich habitats.
Radwell Meadows and Plantation
This includes a popular picnic and play area as well as a pasture that runs along the banks of the Ivel chalk stream. Along the route you will also see hedgerows, arable fields and an old coppiced hazel woodland.
Standalone Farm and Greenway café
A delightful small working farm set in 125 acres of farmland on the outskirts of Letchworth. Their Greenway Café welcomes you to stop by and enjoy some delicious treats.
Willian Pond
Adding to the picturesque village scene, Willian Pond is a popular spot with local anglers as well as abundant wildlife, including bats.
Wymondley Woods
A short detour from the Greenway will take you to this 200-year-old mosaic of grassy glades within plantation woodland. This was enhanced through some millennium planting. There is also a ground-fed ancient pond which connects to a stream and a second pond.
